
Tom Leighton
Tom Leighton co-founded Akamai Technologies in 1998 and has served as its CEO since 2013, after 14 years as Chief Scientist. Under his leadership, Akamai has expanded its portfolio from content delivery network (CDN) services to include cybersecurity and cloud computing, significantly increasing revenue and establishing the company as a leader in protecting against cyber threats. He holds over 50 patents related to content delivery, internet protocols, and algorithms, and has been recognized with a Technology & Engineering Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering contributions to content delivery. Tom Leighton co-founded Akamai Technologies in 1998, becoming CEO in 2013. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2017 for pioneering content delivery networks. In 2018, he received the Marconi Prize for his fundamental contributions to technology. Leighton was awarded the IEEE John von Neumann Medal in 2023 for his work on algorithm design. In 2025, he will receive a Technology & Engineering Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award for transforming the television industry.
